“I did not change the destination I want to be at.. I only change the path to reach it”
Adeepa Kularathna, Selected for B.Sc in IT Degree in the University of Moratuwa, Loyalty Pledge Scholar
Adeepa Kularathna hails from Kadawatha. He gained admission to Royal College after excelling at the Grade 5 Scholarship examination with 185 marks. He passed the Ordinary Level examination with 9 As. To achieve his life long ambition of becoming an IT Professional, he chose to follow the IT stream for Advanced Level examination.
His life changed in a spur of a moment in 2020. Adeepa explains. “It was a tragic accident. On that day, I was traveling in a bus to Miriswatte from Gampaha after my tuition classes. I was suddenly got thrown out of the bus as the driver applied breaks and succumbed to injuries. Eventually, the right leg had to be amputated and I consequently had to undergo a prolonged physiotherapy programme.
It was a game changer in Adeepa’s life. Undoubtedly, this incident posed so many questions on Adeepa’s future to everyone around him. Adeepa explains. “I knew that life for me would never be the same again. I realized that worrying over the past would not help me nor my family. I made the determination for my self that I would never be a dependent of anyone. I resolved to myself that I would stand up alone in my life. The only way to achieve it was education. I had lost a considerable period of time to prepare for the A/L exam and the wounds were still painful. Nevertheless, I resumed my studies with my firm determination”
Adeepa could not attend tuition classes as he did earlier. He had to look for individual tuition given his condition. Adeepa’s father works in a jewellery shop and his mother is an assistant accountant in a company providing catering services. Adeepa is the only child. He quickly realized that his parents could not afford to provide him with private tuition.
Adeepa goes onto explain how he overcame this challenge. “I approached Loyalty Pledge. They readily came forward to help me. Loyalty Pledge with the assistance of several donors, supported me financially to settle my tuition fees. That was a great support to me and as a result, I was able to take lessons privately from best teachers around Gampaha. With the unstinted support given by Loyalty Pledge, I was able to secure 2 As and 1B and thereby to qualify myself to the B.Sc IT programme of the University of Moratuwa. Now, I am on the course of achieving whom I want to be”.
Whilst Adeepa is awaiting to start his university life, he has already started his entrepreneurial career. He has self-studied developing websites in the YouTube and he is already undertaking to develop websites on professional basis. He has secured few clients within this short span of time.
Adeepa shares his reflection on life. “ Life is full of challenges. If you help yourself, there will be a plenty of people around you to support you. Therefore, do not give up and help yourself to achieve what you want in life as I did. I never changed the destination I want to be at due to the accident. I only changed my path to reach it”.

Adeepa is a living example for young Royalists as well as all Sri Lankans on facing challenges in life. He has brought certainty and brightness to his life from despair and bleakness through unreserved determination and sheer commitment. In 2023 which marks 20th anniversary of Loyalty Pledge, it is our resolution that the Loyalty Pledge would have privilege and honor to enlighten the lives of thousands of Sri Lankans in time to come.
